History
Rotherham Scorpions Junior Table Tennis Club was formed in 1995 with the initial sessions being held at the now demolished Sheffield Road Baths. The club then moved to Thrybergh Sports Centre where 8 tables are used. Herringthorpe Leisure Centre is also an 8 table centre with the British League Academy Session held there on Saturdays. National and British League squad training is also held at Dearne Valley College (Dearne Valley TTC) on Monday evenings for players of a high standard. Match venues are Clifton Methodist Church Hall and Eastwood View Methodist Church Hall .
Affiliation and Membership
The Club is affiliated to the South Yorkshire Table Tennis Association and competes in National Cadet League, National Junior League, Junior British League & Senior Men's British League, has 6 teams in Rother- Valley & District Table Tennis League and 2 teams in Sheffield Table Tennis League.
Rotherham Scorpions are part of PremierClub - the English Table Tennis Association national programme for club development. We are registered at Advanced level which means that we have attained set standards in areas of club development such as playing programme, management duty of care and ethics, coaching and competition, facilities and other club activities. Our Club 'Record of Achievement' file provides evidence that we have attained certain standards; it is available on request for those interested. We are also working towards Clubmark status - a Sport England cross-sport scheme that recognises safe, effective, child friendly sports clubs.
We have an open membership policy and have a range of members whose ages range from 7 to 90, male and female, from all sections of the community. The membership size as of March 2005 was approximately 60.
Activities
The club has a varied playing programme and runs coaching, competitions and open play for members and non-members. Members are also responsible for the Rotherham Schools Table Tennis League and have recently been given funding to expand our coaching activities into schools in the Rotherham area.
Occasional social events and visits to Table Tennis events are organised. All activities are conducted under the auspices of qualified ETTA coaches.
